Colombo, Sri Lanka, October 28, 2024 – The Sri Lanka-China Friendship Association (SLCFA) inaugurated a special photography exhibition celebrating 75 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The exhibition, themed “After Liberation: China’s Development in 75 Years,” was held under the distinguished patronage of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Sri Lanka. Open from October 28 to October 29, the exhibition took place at the Exhibition Hall of the Public Library in Colombo, providing visitors with a visual journey through China’s transformation since 1949.
The opening ceremony was graced by Hon. Mr. Hanif Yusoof, Governor of the Western Province, as Chief Guest, and His Excellency Qi Zhenhong, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Sri Lanka, as Guest of Honour. The exhibition highlighted China’s progress in economic reform, infrastructure, technology, and social development over the past seven decades, underscoring the strong ties between China and Sri Lanka.
Mr. Ananda Goonatilleke, President of SLCFA, welcomed attendees, acknowledging the organization’s long-standing commitment to fostering friendship between the two nations. He expressed his gratitude to the Embassy of China for its support and explained the slight delay in the exhibition, originally planned for October 1, due to the Sri Lankan Presidential election.
Governor Hanif Yusoof’s Address
In his speech, Hon. Mr. Hanif Yusoof conveyed his admiration for China’s achievements and the steadfast support it has shown to Sri Lanka. His speech in full:
“Your Excellency Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China and Madam, President of the Sri Lanka – China Friendship Association, members of the press, ladies, and gentlemen,
It gives me great pleasure as the Governor of the Western Province representing this province and, by extension, the President of Sri Lanka, His Excellency Anura Kumara Dissanayake. We have a long road ahead of us, and as I stand before you, I want to salute the People’s Republic of China for standing firmly with our country through all its important moments.
When I was young, the first large building and landscape I ever saw was the BMICH, where we hosted the Non-Aligned Conference. It was a time when the world was ruled by two superpowers, but we opted for Non-Alignment. Our country wants to be friends with everyone.
Today, I am here to celebrate 75 years of the People’s Republic of China. The lesson we could learn from you is that working together, we can prosper. Our president has always emphasized that racial harmony and the rule of law are key to our progress, with a vision of zero corruption. This is a major overhaul for a country that has faced challenges since independence.
As I stand here at this photography exhibition, I am reminded of the importance of capturing our progress, in good times and bad. China’s support has always been invaluable. Your Excellency, you were the first to assist Sri Lanka during recent floods, a gesture that solidified the friendship between our two countries. It is timely acts like these that underscore the depth of our friendship.
My aim is to make the Western Province a model for safety, cleanliness, good governance, and environmental consciousness. This province contributes 45% of the country’s GDP, and with your example, we hope to make it flourish.
Thank you to the Sri Lanka-China Friendship Association and Your Excellency the Ambassador for always being gracious. Thank you to the members of the press, ladies, and gentlemen, for making this occasion memorable. May God bless you all.”
Ambassador Qi Zhenhong’s Address
His Excellency Qi Zhenhong reflected on China’s journey and reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka. His full speech follows:
“Hon. Mr. Hanif Yusoof, Governor of the Western Province, Mr. Ananda Goonatilleke, President of SLCFA, dear friends, ladies, and gentlemen, Ayubowan! Vanakkam! Good afternoon!
The past 75 years have been a journey of resilience for China. Since its founding in 1949, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), China has transformed from a nation standing upright to one that is prosperous and strong. Today, we are confidently moving toward a great modern socialist country in all respects.
The Communist Party of China has led this transformation through reform and opening up, with the 20th CPC Central Committee’s Third Plenary Session this year setting objectives for modernization. Over 300 reforms will be achieved by the 80th anniversary in 2029.
China and Sri Lanka share a friendship that spans over 2,000 years. Long before 1957, when diplomatic ties were officially established, our nations collaborated on the historic Rubber-Rice Pact, a symbol of our spirit of unity. For 67 years, China has supported Sri Lanka based on mutual respect, equality, and shared benefits. History has shown that, in times of change, China stands with Sri Lanka, a true friend and reliable partner.
The people of Sri Lanka are resilient and will overcome today’s challenges, ushering in prosperity. Sri Lanka, as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean,’ will shine even brighter. Together, our strategic partnership, rooted in sincere mutual assistance and everlasting friendship, will continue to reach greater heights.”
Following the speeches, Mr. Prasad Wijesuriya, General Secretary of the SLCFA, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the guests and all who contributed to the event’s success. The exhibition featured a range of photographs illustrating China’s transformation and its impact on the world, leaving a lasting impression on the attendees. Among the dignitaries in attendance were Mr. Aruna Goonatilleke, SLCFA Executive Vice President, Vice Presidents Mr. D.M.P. Dissanayake and Mr. Thilak Botheju, Mr. Gamini Rajanayaka Treasurer, Ms. Chinta Goonatilleke Assistant Secretary, Mr. Tharindu Suresh Assistant Treasurer and other key figures, celebrating the enduring friendship between Sri Lanka and China.
