General Secretary’s Message

STRENGTHENING PEOPLE-TO-PEOPLE BONDS: A LEGACY OF FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN SRI LANKA AND CHINA

As the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka-China Friendship Association (SLCFA), I am privileged to share this message reflecting on our organization’s proud legacy and its continued commitment to fostering deep and enduring ties between Sri Lanka and China. Established in 1950 as the pioneering entity for People-to-People diplomacy, the SLCFA has been a steadfast force in promoting diplomatic, political, cultural, educational, and social cooperation between our two nations.

The SLCFA’s journey began under the visionary leadership of Mrs. Kusuma Gunawardena, our first president, who, along with the Ceylon Communist Party, founded what was initially known as the “Ceylon-China Friendship Union” on Thursday, September 21, 1950. This organization, which later evolved into the “Ceylon-China Friendship Association” and ultimately the “Sri Lanka-China Friendship Association” after Sri Lanka attained republic status in 1972, has played a crucial role in shaping the bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and China.

We take pride in recalling our significant contributions to the establishment of the Rubber-Rice Pact in 1952, which marked the beginning of formal trade relations between our countries, and the subsequent establishment of diplomatic relations in 1957. These milestones are a testament to the forward-thinking vision of Sri Lanka’s progressive and left-wing leaders, including the late Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, whose efforts laid the foundation for the strong ties we enjoy today.

For over seven decades, the SLCFA has stood as a beacon of friendship with China, navigating the tides of history alongside all Presidents, Prime Ministers, Governments, and leading political parties in Sri Lanka. Our organization has remained resilient, adapting to changing times while holding steadfast to the principles that have guided our nations since the independence of Sri Lanka and the liberation of China.

Mao Zedong once said, “The people, and the people alone, are the motive force in the making of world history.” Inspired by these words, the SLCFA continues to thrive as a people-to-people friendship organization, with a diverse membership drawn from various backgrounds and possessing a wide range of abilities. As we look to the future, I call upon all members to contribute their unique talents and energies to elevate our organization to new heights.

I am confident that, with our collective efforts, the Sri Lanka-China Friendship Association will continue to be a dynamic and influential force, strengthening the bonds of friendship between our nations and standing as a proud symbol of our shared history and aspirations.
