The Sri Lanka–China Friendship Association (SLCFA) proudly announced the establishment of its Kandy District Branch, with the Inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 15th November 2025 at the Knox Lounge, The Bake House, Kandy. This marks another significant step in strengthening people-to-people friendship and expanding SLCFA’s footprint across Sri Lanka.

The newly appointed President of SLCFA, Mr. Aruna Goonatilleke, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, symbolizing the National Executive Committee’s commitment to empowering provincial branches. He was accompanied by a delegation from the main Association, including Mr. Prasad Wijesuriya – General Secretary, Mr. Udeni Dissanayake – Social Affairs Secretary, and Mr. Sudath Krishantha – Organizing Secretary.

The meeting was convened by Mr. Wijitha Wasgewatta, Secretary of the Wattegama Pradeshiya Sabha, who warmly welcomed the distinguished guests and attendees. In his opening remarks, he highlighted the importance of forming the Kandy District Branch to enhance collaboration, foster cultural exchange, and create new bridges of friendship between Sri Lanka and China from the regional level.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Aruna Goonatilleke, President of SLCFA, extended his heartfelt wishes and emphasized the pivotal role district branches play in promoting people-to-people diplomacy, cultural engagement, and grassroots cooperation. He reaffirmed the National Executive Committee’s full support towards the newly formed branch and encouraged members to carry forward the Association’s rich legacy.

Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Prasad Wijesuriya, General Secretary, elaborated on the historical ties between Sri Lanka and China, the importance of sustained friendship, and the opportunities for youth engagement, educational collaboration, and community-driven initiatives. His address provided a roadmap for the branch to integrate with national-level programs and upcoming joint activities.

Mr. Udeni Dissanayake, Social Affairs Secretary, offered practical guidance on the operational aspects of a district branch, explaining governance structures, coordination mechanisms, and community outreach activities. His insights provided clarity to the incoming leadership on maintaining effective administration and executing meaningful friendship programs.

The formation of the SLCFA Kandy District Branch signifies a major milestone in expanding the Association’s activities across Sri Lanka, enhancing inclusivity, and promoting deeper bonds of cooperation with the people of China. The SLCFA looks forward to empowering the Kandy Branch through joint initiatives, cultural exchanges, youth engagement programs, and collaborative events that strengthen mutual understanding and friendship between the two nations.
