The Sri Lanka–China Friendship Association (SLCFA) proudly announced the successful completion of its 75th Anniversary Celebration and 40th National Congress, held on 21st September 2025 at the hotel Royal Grand , Ja-Ela.

This historic milestone commemorated seven and a half decades of unwavering people-to-people friendship and cooperation between Sri Lanka and the People’s Republic of China.

The ceremony was graced by the Former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena, a respected national leader and long-standing member of the SLCFA. His presence brought honour and significance to this commemorative occasion.

A Key Outcome: Adoption of a New Constitution Strengthening Consultative Democracy

One of the most important achievements of the 40th National Congress was the unanimous adoption of a new Constitution, designed to strengthen consultative democracy within the Association.

The new constitutional reforms will enhance the effectiveness, transparency, and organizational strength of the SLCFA, empowering it to further expand its mission of promoting people-to-people friendship, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding between Sri Lanka and China. The reforms represent a major step forward in modernizing the Association to meet future challenges and opportunities.

Honouring Three Decades of Leadership: Mr. Ananda Goonatilleke Appointed Honorary Chairman

The Congress also marked the retirement of Mr. Ananda Goonatilleke, who served as President of the SLCFA for an exceptional 30 years. In recognition of his enormous contribution, steadfast leadership, and lifelong commitment to Sri Lanka–China friendship, he was honoured with the title of Honorary Chairman.

His leadership helped guide the Association through a period of significant growth, international engagement, and strengthened bilateral ties.

Appointment of the Board of Patrons

A distinguished Board of Patrons was appointed, bringing together respected national figures who have made enduring contributions to Sri Lanka and to the work of the SLCFA. The Patrons are:

  • Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena – Former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka (Chief Patron)
  • Hon. D. E. W. Gunasekera – Leader of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, former Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament
  • Hon. Thilak Karunaratne – Former Member of Parliament of Sri Lanka

All three are long-standing members of the SLCFA with decades of service in strengthening Sri Lanka–China relations.

New Leadership Elected for the 2025–2030 Term

The National Congress elected a new leadership team to guide the Association into its next chapter of growth:

  • Mr. Aruna Goonatilleke – President
  • Mr. Prasad Wijesuriya – General Secretary
  • Mr. Thilak Botheju – Treasurer

Their combined experience, commitment, and vision will support the Association’s continued expansion across cultural, educational, economic, and community-level initiatives.
